BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES
Overview of the program
The English Language Studies of the College of Arts and Sciences is offered through the undergraduate program. Students pursuing a degree under this course often read materials from various genres of literature, including poetry, dramas and novels, as well as writing classes. Through expansive offerings in creative writing, literary histories, vultures and theories, students explore and discover the complexities of the human experience and come to appreciate the power of language to shape thoughts. The program upholds the following mission, vision and goals.
Goals and Objectives
To introduce students to the study of literature by providing practice in careful, critical reading and developing in them a sense of the various contexts—biographical, social, political, etc.—that can enrich their understanding of a work.
To help students see themselves as professionals, as part of a discipline with skills and abilities valuable in the business, teaching, publishing, or post-graduate work.
To assure that students encounter creativity crucial to English studies through theater productions, readings by professional writers, and their own creative and critical production and presentation.
To balance the needs of general education – communication, diversity, global perspectives, interdisciplinary studies – with those of the major.
To alert students to the importance of any literary work’s linguistic context and its linguistic form, and provide them with the tools necessary for analyzing texts linguistically by offering courses in the structure and the history of the English language.
To provide a curriculum that serves the needs of all three emphasis areas (Language Arts, Secondary Education, Language and Literature) by offering our students relevant course choices within a well-structured framework.
To encourage students to demonstrate an ability to work within the accepted disciplinary conventions of writing about literature, including responsible use of research.
To produce graduates with critical thinking skills on social, cultural, political, and educational issues surrounding language study and form an independent, informed view on the issues they study regarding the politics of language, cultural and cross-cultural communication, and (both first and second) language education.
To provide remedial instruction for those students who require it; and bring students with second language and dialect interference problems into the mainstream of standard written English
To enable students to transfer sensitivity to language and literary structure to their own writing, through a required writing component in each course
To enhance students’ perception of the richness and diversity of the social and ethical values in literature and foster in students an appreciation and enjoyment of literature’s aesthetic and intellectual elements.
To refine students’ interpretive skills by introducing them to a variety of critical methods and by providing courses on critical topics to help students investigate the nature of literary analysis itself.
BACHELOR OF ARTS IN COMMUNICATION
Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Program centers on the study of how the different ways of relaying information to the public through diverse media platforms—particularly print, film, television, radio and photography. The program’s curriculum is designed to equip students with appropriate knowledge and competencies of how communication works across various interpersonal relationships, organizations, groups and cultures.
Program Objectives
a. To provide a comprehensive knowledge of media and communications—its history, development, criticisms, theories and use;
b. To create an environment conducive to a practical experience and application of media production;
c. To expose students to the realities of media and communication in the Philippines, in Asia, and the rest of the world; and
d. To help students experience industry-based practicum and maximize career opportunities through the school‘s linkages with various media agencies
BACHELOR ARTS IN POLITICAL SCIENCE
Overview
The Political Science Program is committed in providing a rigorous course of study that emphasizes the integration of theoretical and evidence – based learning. The study of Political Science Program fosters critical thinking, equipping students with the analytical tools to approach the fundamental problems of political life in an extensive and systematic manner. The Political Science program has continued to harness its potential embraces a multiplicity of approaches and methods, from reading primary text to exposing students to cutting-edge research both in the classroom and beyond.
Program Objectives
At the end of the degree program;
1.CONTENT KNOWLEDGE: Student should have substantial knowledge in several major subfields of political science. This includes knowledge about Western Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Economy, Political Ideas, Political Ideologies, Political Institution, Political Policies, Political Processes and Political Behavior.
2.METHODS KNOWLEDGE: Student should have an excellent ability to conduct their own academic inquiries using applicable research design and conventional quantitative and qualitative methods.
3.CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM – SOLVING SKILLS: Student should be able to understand, analyze and produce arguments and evaluate evidence on contemporary political questions.
4.COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Student should demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.
BACHELOR OF ARTS MAJOR IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Overview:
The Bachelor of Arts Major in Community Development is a four-year program which aims to produce highly principled, critical thinking, theory-based, and productive graduates who are well equipped to organize people and communities that require organizing. It is designed to advance a student’s communicative competence, sociological imagination, critical analysis of social issues, macro and micro organizing capabilities, research competence, and research-based action planning.
Program Objectives:
a. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge in Sociological theories and Community Organizing theories.
b. Demonstrate knowledge in conflict sensitivity and conflict de-escalation.
c. Demonstrate knowledge in the Sustainable development goals.
d. Demonstrate knowledge in community organizing.
e. Demonstrate the ability to produce quality and ethical research.
f. Demonstrate theory-based analyses of past and present community/social issues.
